Language of Cambodia

Language of Cambodia

The official language of Cambodia is Cambodian, or Khmer. This language belongs to Mon-Khmer or Austro-Asiatic language family of language. The language of Cambodia is not as easy to pick up as other languages might be and westerners might find it a little difficult to follow.

The Mon-Khmer languages are the autochthonous language family of Indo-China. Together with the Munda languages of India, they are one of the two traditional primary branches of the Austro-Asiatic language family. The Eastern Mon Khmer languages include languages like:-

- Khmer in Cambodia, southern Vietnam, and northeastern Thailand
- Pearic in southern Cambodia
- Bahnaric in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos
- Katuic in central Laos
- Vietic in Vietnam

Another important spoken language in Cambodia is French. Your Cambodia Overview will make clear that French has been and still is to some extent the lingua franca of Indochina. The language is still by spoken by some, mostly older Cambodians as a second language. The French language is also the means of instruction in various schools and universities. There are many such educational institutions that are funded by the government of France.

Cambodian French is virtually another language of Cambodia. This dialect is a reflection of the country's colonial past and is still frequently used in the government.

Another Cambodia Language that is slowly finding prevalence is English. Many younger Cambodians and those in the business class speak the language these days. Thus the prevalence of English as a language of Cambodia should not pose too big a problem for tourists in Cambodia.

Economy and Politics of Cambodia

Economy and Politics of Cambodia

To elaborate on the scene of Politics in Cambodia; the country has a constitutional monarchy similar to the political system in the United Kingdom. Like Queen Elizabeth II the king of Cambodia reigns but does not rule. Politically according to its constitutions of 1993 Cambodia is a parliamentary representative democratic monarchy. The Prime Minister of Cambodia is the head of government, and of a pluralist multi-party system, while the king is the head of state. The Prime minister of Cambodia is appointed by the King as per the suggestions and approval of the National Assembly. The Prime Minister and his or her ministerial appointees make up the executive of the government and exercise the executive functions of the state. The legislative functions are carried out by both the executive and the two chambers of parliament, the National Assembly of Cambodia and the Senate.

Despite its recent progress the economy and politics of Cambodia is still very much under the shadow of decades of civil war, internal strife and corruption. The Economy of Cambodia is looking up and the per capita income of the country is rising slowly but is however pretty low compared to other countries of the region.

Cambodia's minimal exports are a quite a major part of the country's revenues and are pretty important for the economy and politics of Cambodia. Products that are exported by the country are rice, fish, timber, garments and rubber. United States, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China, Indonesia and Malaysia are its major export partners, giving a major boost to Cambodia Economy.

The world image of economy and politics of Cambodia is not very favorable however, as was evident from the country's rank of 151 among the 163 countries that were rated by Transparency International.

Geography of Cambodia

Geography of Cambodia

The political geography of Cambodia is defined by 13° N latitude 105° E longitude. Cambodia's 2,572 km border is split among Vietnam (1,228 km), Thailand (803 km) and Laos (541 km), with 443 km as coastline. Cambodia geography's most dominant features are Tonle Sap (Great Lake) and the Mekong River, which traverses the country from north to south. The country is completely within the tropics and its southernmost tip is only slightly more than 10° above the equator.

Geography of Cambodia in reference to it climate

The climatic geography of Cambodia is mostly monsoonal and has clearly demarcated wet and dry seasons of relatively equal length. The mercury is always pretty high and the level of humidity is pretty high. Two thirds of the country is covered by forests. A lot of the forest cover has however been degraded due to practice of slash-and-burn and shifting agriculture.

The temperature is mostly level throughout the Tonle Sap Basin area, with minimal chnges from the average temperature. The annual mean temperature is around 25°C. The maximum mean has till date bean about 28 degrees Celsius. The minimum mean has so far been about 22 degrees Celsius. Maximum temperatures higher than 32°C are commonplace. Sometimes just before the onset of the rainy season temperatures often rise to more than 38°C. Minimum temperatures rarely fall below 10°C. January is the coldest month, and April is the warmest. Typhoons--tropical cyclones--that often devastate coastal Vietnam rarely cause damage in Cambodia.

The geography of Cambodia is one of the reasons that contribute to Cambodia's immense popularity with tourists.

Currency of Cambodia

Cambodia has recently emerged as a one of the most popular tourist destinations in world and a peek into the Cambodia Overview will make things clear. Cambodia is a kingdom in Southeast Asia with a population of almost 15 million people, with Phnom Penh being the capital city. This country was once the seat of the once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. The country has Thailand as a neighbor to its west and northwest, with Laos to its northeast, and with Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand. The official currency of Cambodia is used less often than US dollars.

It is often jokingly said the "real" currency of Cambodia is the US dollar. In fact if you are staying in Phnom Penh or visiting Angkor you can pay for almost all goods in US dollars.

The actual currency of Cambodia is riel. There have been two distinct issues of riels in the history of currency at Cambodia. The first time it was issued was between 1952 and 1975. The second time it was issued was in 1980. The country has no monetary system between 1975 and 1980 i.e. there was no riel or any kind of currency in Cambodia during this time period. In the past the currency of Cambodia had also come out in Cambodian tical and Cambodian franc versions.

When the currency of Cambodia, riel, was re-established in 1980 it was valued at 4 riels = 1 US dollar. It is subdivided into 10 kak or 100 sen. Later issues of banknotes went up to 100,000 riels. However, due to low prices in Cambodia, currency in Cambodia above 20,000 riels is rarely seen.

The currency of Cambodia is today used mainly for buying local produce and other merchandise. The US dollar, especially the one-dollar bill, is very prevalent throughout Cambodia for almost all purposes and is often preferred to the riel, earning the tag of unofficial second currency in Cambodia.
